Genuine participation encourages a sense of ownership from all involved. Participation is one of SHE's key concepts and an integral part of the whole school approach. Participation promotes skills such as motivation, ownership, self-esteem, self-efficacy, relationships and promotes a positive school culture. SHE’s teacher materials on Key concepts and activities for learning about health and health promotion in schools devotes several pages to the definition, importance and enablement of participation (pg. 14-16). SHE's teacher materials on Health promoting schools and school inequities focus on activities that encourage participation. In addition, SHEs case stories provide many examples of participation in health-promoting activities in a school setting.
